Carnival Row Trailer Flutters In…

Feast your eyes on the trailer for Carnival Row:

A Victorian era detective series starring Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom, featuring fairies and mythological creatures, with Bloom doing his best working class growly accent might seem designed to simply annoy a certain proportion of the viewing public just by its very existence.

But exist it does, courtesy of an eight episode series coming from Amazon at the end of August, and perhaps those viewers will be more intrigued by the presence of a serial killer, bumping off said creatures.

It certainly looks like another show that Amazon have pumped a lot of time and money into, and it has to be said the trailer has a certain charm. It’s also directed by Jon Amiel, who did the wonderful BBC series, The Singing Detective. But he also directed Copycat and Entrapment. So, y’know…

Maybe that part of the population will give this an episode or two to win them over. Or maybe they won’t. It’s a harsh world out there.

Carnival Row arrives on August 30th.

Netflix Launches Dark Crystal Trailer

Netflix has just dropped the first full trailer for their sequel to the late Jim Henson’s 1982 movie, The Dark Crystal, Age of Resistance. Check out the trailer here:

While I’m a huge admirer of Henson and of the artistry behind his amazingly creative films such as The Dark Crystal, I’m also not the world’s biggest fantasy fan – despite my myriad of other geek credentials – so I’m approaching this with some wariness.

But I have to say the trailer looks ravishing and has piqued my interest. I’m sure I’ll be catching the first episodes of this ten episode series from the increasingly world-dominating Netflix (at least until Disney launch their rival channel later this year).

Directed by Louis Leterrier (Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk), and featuring the voices of Taron Egerton and Anya Taylor-Joy, The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance launches on August 30th, 2019.

A Fin Romance – Del Toro’s The Shape of Water

shape of water

Guillermo Del Toro has so many projects announced that at times it’s quite a surprise when one actually reaches the screen. When they do they’re always very welcome and The Shape of Water is no exception.

His latest is a fantasy romance set against the backdrop of the Cold War (around 1963) and tells the tale of lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins), trapped in a life of silence and isolation while working at a hidden high-security government laboratory. Elsa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.

Del Toro has landed a fabulous cast to star alongside Hawkins and Spencer, including Doug Jones (that’s him in the fish suit, of course), Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Lauren Lee Smith and Michael Stuhlbarg.

With a trailer as charming as this it’s sure to be a delightful (and moist) tug at the heartstrings.

The Shape of Water is scheduled for release on December 8, 2017.
